 Sometime in the late 1800’s, an old European tradesman resettled in the city of Covington, Louisiana. “Old man Graves” was what the townspeople called him. Graves was a businessman by trade with an affinity for the macabre. Shortly after moving to the city, he opened a coffin-manufacturing factory at the site of the abandoned Asylum For The Criminally Insane on Lockwood in downtown Covington at the edge of the old city graveyard. Strangely enough, Old Man Graves negotiated a deal with the property owner to purchase the graveyard and incorporate it into his business to become a “one stop shop” for his patrons proclaiming behind closed doors that he wanted to “Can Um and Plant Um!” For many years he operated a successful business, becoming a cornerstone of the community. He gained the trust of many, serving them in their times of need when losing their loved ones by laying them to their final rest in Graves’ City of the Dead. However, Graves’ family members did not enjoy the same public opinion. Graves’ brother, nicknamed “Dr. Deadly,” was declared mentally insane after it was discovered that the “good” doctor was performing hideous experiments with the bodies of the freshly dead, which he conveniently exhumed from the neighboring graveyard. Shortly after this discovery, the townspeople turned on Old Man Graves, forcing him out of business. In a desperate attempt to survive, Graves moved the graveyard adjoining his factory and sold the property off. He moved the headstones, but not the bodies. Then suddenly, Graves and his family disappeared without a trace.Over time, the factory fell into ruin. Graves was never seen again. Rumors of screams and ghastly sightings around the property still haunt the neighborhood. Townspeople call the site “The Scream Factory.” People even whisper stories of how Graves kept his brother under lock and key in an old cell left over from the Insane Asylum. Some say he escaped to continue his diabolical scheme. They say that these experiments go on to this day and his victims walk the property at night. They say they are the living dead. |
